Trick or Treat, Smell my Feet!

“Black cats and goblins and broomsticks and ghosts
Covens of witches with all of their hosts
You may think they scare me
You’re probably right
Black cats and goblins on Halloween night. Trick or Treat!”

Yep, it’s that time of year again! Bring out your best horror movies to watch, your favorite ghost stories and legends because Halloween is just around the corner and I’m just itching for a good scare… or two!

The first thing that comes to mind when the leaves start to change colors and dusk brings a golden tint to the skies is nostalgia. It is one of my favorite attributes of the Fall. Another? Halloween! (Drops mic) Going into stores and seeing Halloween displays I feel like a kid in a candy store; giddy, “greedy”, and wanting it all! I try to ignore all the Christmas decor that adorn aisles and aisles of shelves in July and focus on that “one Halloween shelf”. Of course, I exaggerate but I can’t help but  feel a bit insulted when Halloween is not given the proper exposure and respect. Sure, there’s Spirit Halloween on what feels like every other corner, but they all carry the same stuff. For the most part, you go into one and you’ve already seen it all. Now, I just go in for laughs and for the sake of “entertaining” [seescare the crap out of] my daughter. The place just ceases to impress me anymore.

Nowadays, things are a little different with me. I’d say, pre-homeowner, I would grab anything Halloween-related, for decor purposes, and try to accommodate a space for it. The result was just a cluster-fu@# of decor for the sake of displaying whatever Halloween “goody” I had at the time and “filling the gap”. This was in our apartment days so space was crammed and truly limited. But, that never stopped me!

Now, I’m older, wiser (up for debate) and, well, more simple or, a minimalist. Not that I was ever a flashy kind of person, but, there was some “flare” when it came to decorating my place. Not the “haunted house” walk-through kind of flare, but just a tinge of it. Not this year! I actually got rid of a lot of my older stuff to make room for some of the new. I gave most of my Halloween decorations of yesteryear to my brother and am focused on being more “sophisticated”, if you can even call it that, with the decorations. Of course, there is a little bit of “this and that” or, as I like to call it, things that would freak out my daughter, Rayen, sprinkled throughout but I have to keep most of that “scary” stuff in my office behind a closed door. At least that will give me some satisfaction while I sit at my computer desk and, you know, work and peruse the inter webs and listen to some tunes on vinyl. What, did you think I was going to say something else?

I’m even thinking of having a small gather for Halloween. I neglect from even calling it a party because, well, you knows, kids and all. So, instead, I’ll probably watch some PG-13 horror films, start up the fire pit and attempt to get through some scary stories if, again, the kids “allow” it. Hopefully I can keep them busy with some smores. I even brought out an old turntable to put into the living room so i can play some old LPs featuring some “scary” stories.
